Importance of Customer Visits

News / Importance of Customer Visits

Customer visits are essential to our client’s weather service. We believe that solid relationships are built through these one-to-one visits, allowing the client to deliver important feedback while seeing firsthand how our services are being used in real time. As a result, we strive to make your business safer and more productive in the face of weather and climate variability.

Recently, Chris Bell (CCO) and Ian Gooch (CIO) visited one of our offshore wind sector customers in Sweden. The visit allowed Chris and Ian to meet the team managing and maintaining the wind farm, experience a boat trip to the turbines, and see the pilots’ challenges firsthand in performing crew transfers.

We also delivered met training to the team, which included how to get the most out of our weather services and what you can expect from a weather forecast.

The valuable feedback gained during the visit allows WeatherQuest to improve our services to the offshore renewable platform, WindQuest, and help deliver support and training opportunities for our forecast team.

We thank our new friends in Sweden for their time and friendly hosting. We hope to see you all soon.

Race for Life – Pretty Muddy Norwich

On Saturday, 13th May, some of our employees completed the Pretty Muddy Race for Life fun run, helping to raise much-needed money for Cancer Research UK.

Our team, The WeatherQuest Stormchasers, did exceptionally well, battling mud-filled obstacles, bouncing on space hoppers, and getting sprayed with water cannons filled with mud, all over a distance of 5km.

Chief Information Officer Ian Gooch said, “I couldn’t be prouder of our team! We all did amazingly well!

Our team raised over £1000, which contributed to a total for the Norwich event of a whopping £108,000 directly for Cancer Research UK.

Thank you again, everyone, for your support and donations. It was a fun but very emotional day as it’s a charity close to many people’s hearts.”

Our donation page is still open if you wish to support our team and Cancer Research UK.

Weatherquest Receives F4OR Status to Support Offshore Renewable Industry

We are proud to announce that Weatherquest has been granted F4OR (Fit 4 Offshore Renewables) status.

Weatherquest was one of 15 companies in the Norfolk/Suffolk region to receive funding provided by the New Anglia Local Economic Partnership (LEP) to support a local cohort of businesses through F4OR. The F4OR New Anglia programme was especially beneficial to Weatherquest in enhancing our business processes and confidence relating to contractual risk management, value stream mapping and alignment of strategic objectives throughout the business. The company is leaner, smarter, and more effective as a result.

The support from the F4OR programme enables Weatherquest Ltd to develop more collaborative partnerships, through reputational enhancement; play a leading role, as a local supplier, in supporting the extensive pipeline of offshore wind projects which will contribute so significantly to the achievement of UK Net Zero targets; and prepare for the next generation of offshore wind projects which will rely more heavily on SOVs and on Floating Wind technologies.

We are grateful to Offshore Renewable Energy CatapultOpergy Ltd. and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership for all their support along the way.

Lightning Strikes Hit Southern England in Intense Storms

News / Lightning Strikes Hit Southern England in Intense Storms

40,000 Lightning Strikes Hit Southern England in Intense Storms

On Sunday afternoon (23rd October), a band of intense thunderstorms developed over northern France and the English Channel, and moved quickly northwards into southern England, the Home Counties, East Anglia and southern North Sea. These storms produced over 40,000 lightning strikes and were accompanied by torrential rain, hail and severe wind gusts of 60-70mph. Wind damage was reported in numerous locations, and at least two tornadoes have been confirmed so far.

It was a busy day in the Weatherquest office as our team of forecasters worked closely with our clients in a variety of sectors. We pride ourselves in our proactiveness, and serve as an extension of our clients’ team — helping to maximise productivity while operating safely and avoiding the waste of resources.

Data-Driven Weather

News / Data-Driven Weather

There is not a single industry on the planet that has not been affected by the weather and its impact on cost and productivity metrics within organisations.

To meet today’s business challenges, businesses must be supported with the best weather and climate data.

The team at Weatherquest, an SME weather forecasting analysis company based in Norwich and located on the University of East Anglia campus, helped make this happen through their support of the digital innovation Amey Utilities / Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) collaborative project.

Weatherquest advised on which of their data sources were most suitable to the project application and went on to provide past and present weather data to the team remotely via an API.

The Virtual Engineering Centre used the data to develop a specific project algorithm to help feed the intuitive customer decision-making tool developed in the project. Enabling the VEC’s client Amey Utilities to use the intuitive web-based customer decision-making platform to make real-time observations and business decisions – ultimately saving time and money.

Ian Gooch, Chief Information Officer at Weatherquest, said:

“As weather professionals, we feel an obligation to help people wherever we can. Though we cannot control weather events, we can use our resources to help our technical partners at Virtual Engineering Centre, use our data to gain deeper insight into how upcoming weather will likely affect people’s businesses and lives and help them make more informed decisions about how they can prepare and respond. We can achieve more through collaboration with our partners and other HEIs.”

Weather API?

News / Found yourself needing a new Weather API?

Found yourself needing a new Weather API?

Recently, Dark Sky shared the news that they have joined Apple; we wish them all the best in their new partnership.

You may have also heard that they are no longer accepting signups to their API service, which will be discontinued at the end of 2021. As companies begin to look for new weather providers, we thought it would be helpful to share some information on our API service!

Forecasts, Observations and Historical Data

We have a suite of APIs available, including:
o             Deterministic, ensemble/probabilistic and monthly weather forecasts
o             Real-time and historical weather measurement data, such as:
o             Weather station observations
o             Rainfall radar
o             Lightning
o             Solar radiation
o             Modelled historical weather data

Smooth Integration

Our data streams can easily be incorporated into your external-facing website and your operational decision support systems. They can also be used for data analysis on behalf of clients. Whatever you want to use it for, our IT team can ensure your new weather API is up and running as quickly as possible.

Developed and Used by Our Meteorologists

Our weather forecast API has been developed in-house by our team our research meteorologists and was designed with our operational forecasters in mind. Our meteorologists use the data into our API daily to help them provide the highest quality and most accurate forecast possible.

Our forecast methodology is multi-layered but also relatively simple. We source our forecast data from well-performing global and high-resolution regional models, including our own Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) model, built and run in-house.

This forecast data is used to create a “multi-model blend” dataset.

Post-processing algorithms are then used site-by-site to increase the forecast accuracy based on known (and calculated) model biases from similar past weather events. In the immediate short-term, nowcasting techniques are also adopted to take the current weather situation (such as radar and the latest observations from weather stations) to project forwards over the next few hours. This means that our API feed is being constantly updated to give you the most accurate forecast possible.

Finally, our philosophy since Weatherquest was founded is always to allow our meteorologists to have the final say in any forecast. So we are passionate about always retaining the ability for forecaster intervention – meaning every forecast you receive will have been examined by a qualified meteorologist, and adjustments made where necessary.

Unique and Interesting Parameters

We offer all the standard variables you would expect to receive in a weather API, including temperature, rainfall, wind and pressure. However, we can also include a range of specialist variables developed by our team.

For the agricultural industry, Spraying Index and Drying Index are beneficial when planning fieldwork, and Growing Degree Hours provide a valuable measure of crop development. We also offer Road State and Ground Icing – vital parameters for winter gritting, as well as a variety of variables for offshore energy, including wave information, hub-height wind speeds and gusts and lightning risk.

These are just a handful of the parameters that Weatherquest offer if you’d like to find out more, email info@weatherquest.co.uk.
